The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), under construction at the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC), represents a source of x-rays ten orders of magnitude brighter in pulses one hundred time shorter than are available at todays circular accelerator light sources.

The High Energy Physics Group (Rich Bionta) is utilizing LLNL expertise in accelerator design to perform R&D of the optics. The LCLS, due to be completed in 2004, will have a wide range of applications from structural biology to high field atomic physics.
