MISSION

N-Division leads the Laboratory in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, applying the science and technology of those fields to Laboratory programs and National missions.The Division is the steward of nuclear data for the Laboratory and takes the lead in innovative applications of that data.
The Division has the responsibility to apply its expertise to national security, energy and healthcare programs. To execute these responsibilities, the Division must attract top scientific and technical staff to the Laboratory.  In order to recruit the best and brightest, the Division conducts world-class research at the cutting edge of nuclear and particle physics.

The High Energy Physics and Accelerator Technology Group applies LLNL expertise in Accelerator Design, Detector R&D, and Large Scale Computing to answer fundamental questions in High Energy Particle and Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics while addressing issues of National Importance.

Nuclear Theory & Modeling
The Nuclear Theory and Modeling Group performs research in basic nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics for the purposes of providing a fundamental understanding of the universe and answering nuclear physics questions critical to Science-based Stockpile Stewardship.

Computational Nuclear Physics
Our mission is to provide high-quality nuclear reaction data and transport algorithms needed by national security and energy programs. Current research in the nuclear data arena focuses on cross sections for neutron-induced reactions. Transport algorithm R&D efforts are on improvements to radiation transport.

Division Leader: Edward Hartouni

Edward Hartouni received a B.A in physics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1976 and an M.A., M.Ph., and Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1978, 1979, and 1984, respectively. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Massachusetts from 1985 to 1988 and an assistant professor there from 1985 to 1994. He joined Lawrence Livermore in 1995 as a physicist involved in high-energy physics research. In 1995 Ed Hartouni joined the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory N Division. At LLNL he became the Program Leader in the proton radiography program a collaboration
with LANL. Work for this program culminated in the Scrounge-atron, a proposal to build an accelerator from existing parts at the Nevada Test Site to enable proton radiography
experiments on relevant, dynamic objects. During this time period maintained an attenuated presence in basic research with the collaboration MINOS (Main Injector
Neutrino OScillation ) experiment at Fermilab as well as the PHENIX experiment at BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and most recently the MIPP experiment at Fermilab.
Co-author over 80 refereed publications in high energy physics and radiology.

Currently as N Division leader (a position he holds since 2002) he oversees the basic and applied research activities in Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics and Accelerator
Technologies. An important aspect of this activity is to seek alignment between the basic research goals of the division and the goals of LLNL’s programs in nuclear weapons
stewardship, nonproliferation, homeland security and the National Ignition Facility.
