Greg Brown is a physicist in V Division’s Radiative Properties group. Greg began his work at LLNL in 1993 as a graduate student in the spectroscopy group at the Electron Beam Ion Trap facility, where he studied X-ray emission from Fe L-shell ions. After being awarded his Ph.D. from Auburn University in 2000, Greg worked as a post-doc in the microcalorimeter group at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. While at Goddard, Greg became the co-lead scientist for calibration of the X-ray microcalorimeter, known as the XRS, currently on the Suzaku X-ray Observatory. In the fall of 2004, Greg returned to LLNL where his research is centered on experiments using the Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT). Greg’s interests include high resolution spectroscopy for benchmarking atomic spectral models, laboratory simulation of plasmas found in celestial sources, X-ray emission from comets, planetary atmospheres and stellar coronae, and also the development and calibration of spectrometers for space flight, and for diagnosing high energy density plasmas. Greg is also a guest observer for the Swift Gamma Ray observatory and the Suzaku X-ray observatory.
